Gorey Community School hosts The Great Loreto Bake-Off final 2016
The Home Economics department of Gorey Community School proudly hosted schools from all over Ireland, as young bakers competed in the 2016 final of the ‘Great Loreto Bake-Off’. Finalists travelled from as far away as Donegal and Cork to compete for the junior and senior title. Our own school was represented at junior level by Ruby Levingstone, a third year student and at senior level by Ellen Flood, a fifth year student.
Run in conjunction with the Loreto Education centre, this competition now in its third year, is loosely based on the concept of The Great British  and The Great Irish Bake-Offs. These programmes together with our recent recession have seen a real revival in  interest in home baking. This cookery competition has further encouraged many of our young students to be part of this revival.
On final day, the finalists were asked to prepare, cook and serve a “Show-stopper Baked Dessert”,  in  a three hour time slot,  in front of a panel of five judges. Gorey Community School were proud to have the expertise of a number of local bakers together with the Managing Director of Kenwood, Ireland, to judge the competition. The judges were Una Stafford (Stafford’s Bakery), Siobhan Casey (Primrose Cafe), Didier ( La Boulangerie), Anna Gethings, Head Pastry chef, Brook Lodge, Mc Creddin Village and Susan Coleman (Kenwood, Ireland).
After much deliberation and tasting (of course!) winners were decided upon. A prize giving ceremony was held in the afternoon where a selection of wonderful prizes awaited the worthy winners. First place prize winners at both senior and junior level, received a Kenwood mixer, a cheque for 100 euro and a deluxe hamper of baking goodies and local produce. Star bakers at both levels, received Kenwood hand held mixers, 50 euro and a luxury hamper. Highly commended and all other participants received certificates and goody bags with contents from Kenwood, local produce and baking goodies. Also, this year a perpetual trophy was introduced to the competition. This will be awarded annually to the senior winner of The Great Loreto Bake-off. This trophy was created by local crasftsman Robert O’Connor and has been dedicated to the late sister Eileen Randles, who not only made a great contribution to education but who was also an avid baker herself.
The prizewinners were as follows; Junior winner; Katie Hassan, Loreto Convent, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. Junior ‘Star- Baker’: Caoimhe Hyland, Loreto, Fermoy, Co. Cork. Highly commended junior: Aisling Murray, Loreto High School, Beaufort, Dublin. Senior winner: Sally Nolan, Loreto High School, Beaufort, Dublin. Senior ‘Star-Baker’: Lily Cunniam, Loreto Abbey, Dalkey, Co. Dublin Highly commended: Naomi Kearney, Loreto Community School, Milford, Co. Donegal
The success of our Great Loreto Bake-Off final was attributed to a lot of hard work and planning together with great support from school management and numerous generous sponsors.
