A couple of quick questions: Who said; "It's better to be absolutely
ridiculous than absolutely boring?"  Who invented the lift?  Finally, who was the first member of the Irish delegation to sign the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty?  These were 3 of the questions that saw the Gorey Community School team wipe the boards, winning the Annual National Senior History Quiz, for senior-cycle students, held on Monday night last in Tallaght Community School.

The team members: Owen Kenny, Finbarr Maguire, Cathal Murphy (all 5th year students) plus captain Michael Dwyer from 6th year, were thrilled to receive the prize from Cora O'Dwyer and all the committee of the History Teachers' Association of Ireland (HTAI).  Two of their teachers, Ms Liz Russell and Ms Derville O'Malley-Moore, were present to see the Gorey gang clinch their victory.  And what a victory it was!  They took the honours beating teams from some of the top fee-paying schools in the country, Blackrock College, Gonzaga and Loretto Stephens Green to name just a few.  "I was absolutely thrilled," said Ms Russell, "it's the top award any team from a History class can take and it's the first time it has come to Gorey".  "We've really moved into the big league now" added an excited Ms O'Malley Moore.  Overjoyed principal of GCS, Mr Michael Finn praised the
students and remarked on the 'passion for History' shown by the History teachers on his staff.

If you're still curious about the 3 questions posed at the beginning: the answers are; Marilyn Monroe, Elisha Otis and Arthur Griffith
