GOREY Community School students have proven they are history experts and history makers, after a team from the school was crowned national Junior Cert History Quiz champions, just weeks after another team from the school took the Senior History title.

The team of Third Year students beat teams from across the country, including many of Ireland's top schools, with a decisive victory at the finals of the annual quiz in Dublin.
The win was all the more historic as the students' victory meant a double for the school. Just a few weeks previously, another team from Gorey Community School took the senior History title.
The team members were Laura Kenny, Charlie McGuckin, Grace O'Brien and Seamus O'Donnell, all busy third year students who are preparing for their Junior Cert.
Congratulating the victorious team, Principal Michael Finn said this was a great achievement, as this was the first time in the history of the competition that both titles went to the same school.
Three of the school's History teachers (Geraldine Doran, Derville O'Malley-Moore, and Liz Russell) accompanied the team to the final, and they were ecstatic when the results were announced.
A spokesperson for the school said that with this double victory, Gorey Community School can rightfully claim its place as one of the finest schools to study History in the country and is indeed the envy of many elite, fee-paying schools who were thrashed by the Gorey team. 'It could be Wexford's turbulent and colourful past that has fostered a great love of History in today's young people,' said Ms Russell.
And if the win wasn't enough, two members of the team, Laura Kenny and Grace O'Brien, will soon be joining 42 of their fellow History students when they jet off to the United States for a week-long tour organised by Ms. Russell and her team.
