Italian Exchange

Over the past eleven years Gorey Community School has established very strong links with a school in Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany  through a very successful series of  student exchanges . The exchanges give our Transition Year students a fantastic experience of Italian culture and also gives them a special bond with young Italian citizens.

German Exchange

The German Department of Gorey Community School have embarked on a new Student Exchange venture with St.Ursula-Gymnasium- Geilenkirchen, near Aachen in the West of Germany. Close to the historical towns of Cologne and Aachen, St.Ursula’s are a mixed secondary school, offering both modern and classical languages, as well as a multitude of other subjects. Visits by our students to Geilenkirchen include the participation in regular classes, taught through German, excursions to places of cultural interest, to fun- and adventure parks, and last but not least ordinary life in the families of their German exchange partners. Participants benefit greatly from the immersion into the culture of their target language, and are usually delighted to practise their language skills both in school and when ‘out and about’.
As with all languages, German can be taken at higher and ordinary level, in both junior and leaving certificate. German is a very easy language for Irish people to speak, as it is similar to both English and Irish.

French Exchange

Junior school students of French at Gorey Community School will have the opportunity to travel to Brittany in France to partake in an exchange with our partner school Collège Jacques Prévert in the small market town of Saint Pol de Leon. While in France, students will stay with their pen-pals and their families. This experience will afford them the invaluable experience of sampling French culture and life first hand while also being in a position to practice the language they will have learned over the previous almost three years. While in France, the students will spend one entire day shadowing their pen-pals around the French school, which will give them a working insight into life in a French school, including a three course lunch in the school canteen. On the other days, the group will visit Mont St Michel (Click HERE), Océanopolis (Click HERE) and the city of Brest, the historic town of Morlaix and much more.
Before the Irish group travel to France, Collège Jacques Prévert will already have been to Gorey and the French pen-pals will have spent about a number of days staying with their Irish pen-pals and their families. While in Ireland, the French group will also spend a day in school shadowing their penpals around the school. On the other days, they will visit Dublin, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wells House, The Heritage Park, Curracloe Beach and much more.
On the Saturday, in both France and Ireland, there will be a day trip for the entire group so that everyone can enjoy a day out together. This means, that the families who will host a student will only have to entertain them for one full day; the Sunday.

Spanish Exchange

For the past 10 years the Spanish Department has organised exchanges or study trips for students of TY and 5th Year.  We have been to Salamanca, Valencia, Avila, Guadalajara, Alicante and Badajoz.  This academic year we travelled to Salamanca for the 2nd time and took 20 students on a study trip to this beautiful historic university city.  Classes during the day were followed by cultural activities in the afternoons and we even brought in the New Year early along with thousands of other students in the Plaza Mayor.  We are currently planning where we will go next year.
